Alumni association has been described as a way of giving back vis-a-vis contributing to the growth and development of members, ones former institution of learning, and the society at large.
The President, Alumni Association, Department of Chemical Engineering, Institute of Management of Technology, Enugu, Engr. Lovelyn Okoye made this known during her address at the year 2021 reunion event of the Chemical Engineering Alumni Association of the institution held at Hotel Cordial, New heaven, in Enugu State.
Engr. Okoye who posited that Alumni Association provide a variety of benefits and services that help members maintain connections to their educational institution and fellow graduates, pointed out that being a member of Alumni Association also helps one in connecting with purpose driven like-minds on a platform that provides avenue to give back to the society at large.
The President, while thanking their lecturers for knowledge impacted in them said, "I wish to appreciate our lecturers that moulded us and everyone of us that has been formidable in ensuring the solidification of our bond and propelling the alumni upward.
"The story of our alumni that I will liken to a covalent bond will be incomplete without going down memory lane, to how we started in 2015 as a group on WhatsApp. We had prospects that were laced with complexities and perplexities that made us shudder but, we did not relent. We persisted, looking out for each other, extending tentacles of goodwill the best way we could and here we are in 2021, on the marks of the third reunion and the launch of our magazine themed "Redesigning our world".
She encouraged members of the association to remain united and committed to the progress and prosperity of the association for the benefit of members and the institution (IMT).
On her own, the Head of Department of Chemical Engineering of the institution, Engr. Henrietta Nwabueze who was full of joy seeing the Department former students of 2009 set led by Engr. Lovelyn Okoye giving back to the institution and its community via the alumni, pointed out that she was happy seeing how beautiful, united and successful that they have become.
According to the HOD, "I am very elated and happy because, seeing your products and seeing how beautiful and successful they have become gives you joy and makes you proud. Sincerely, I am so impressed. I thank God for what has become of them because aside teaching, we also from time to time advice our students and, those that make use of the advice come out shinning just like we are seeing them today".
Engr. Nwabueze who was full of confidence that the former students would go far in life, described them as visualisers who were well groomed and self determined to contribute positively to the development of the country.
She implored those present at the reunion event to reach out to their other colleagues yet to join the association and carry them along which by so doing would encourage them to be part of the alumni and at the same time contribute their quota to the growth and progress of the association, while enjoining current students of the institution to see the 2009 set as shinning example worthy of emulation at all times.
In their separate remarks, Engr. Ogbodo Oluchi (An awardee) and Hon. Engr. Anthony Ubagu(Speaker YAN Enugu) described the reunion event as amazing which had given them the opportunity to see their colleagues and friends again after many years of graduation.
The duo commended the executives of the alumni for organizing the event which according to them was interesting, impact-full and well planned.
The 2 day event witnessed Skill Aquisition Empowerment Programme for the Department's undergraduates which featured the Vice President of the Alumni Engr Paul Madu as the facilitator, courtesy visit to the school Deputy Rector Engr. Udeh who is also a Chemical Engr and lecturer in the Department.
Other programmes of the event were visit and presentation of gift items to motherless home, Donations of Gifts to the Department, launching of the Alumni Maiden magazine tagged 'Redesigning Our World' and Awards presentation to lecturers and some members of the Alumni.
The award categories and respective winners were:
1)Alumni Most supportive lecturer- Engr Dr. Christian Echegi
2)Most Impactfull Executive- Ms Lovelyn Okoye
3) Most Impactfull male member- Mr Paul Madu
4)Most impactfull female member- Mrs Lilian Asiegbu
5) Most Active Male member- Mr Francis Chikwe
6) Most Active Female member -Mrs Oluchi Ogbodo
Also, Philanthropic Pillar certificate was presented by the Alumni to some deserving members to appreciate them for their unalloyed supports to the Alumni.
The event which had a memorable lecture session on 'Financial Stability Plan B' facilitated by Dr Emeka Asogwa, the SSA on Youth Empowerment to the Enugu State Governor, and a spicy hot seat session anchored by the Alumni Publicity Secretary, Mr Henry Aneke was well attended and achieved its purpose of upholding the bond of the Old students for more exploits.
