Remains of the late Governorship candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) in Ogun State, Prof David Olufemi Bamgbose have been finally lay to rest on Saturday, in Abeokuta, amid tears and glowing tributes by his friends, family members, academics, clergymen and political associates.
Bamgbose, 54, a professor of Education Management, died on September 2, barely a week after he was officially unveiled as the candidate of the PRP.
His remains were lowered into the grave at his Oke Ata House Estate residence on Saturday.
The funeral service earlier took place at his Peace and Love Church of God, Ogbe, Abeokuta.
The PRP presidential candidate, Kola Abiola, Apostle Lawrence Achudume of the Victory Life Bible Church International, representatives of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Christian bodies and the leadership of the Provost of the Private Colleges of Education in Nigeria, among others were in attendance.
Delivering his sermon, an Ibadan based clergyman, Bishop Samuel Alawode described Bamgbose as an embodiment of talents who he said left the world upon fulfilling God’s purpose for his life.
Alawode asked the congregants not to weep for the dead but for themselves because “life is not about longevity but the fulfillment of God’s purpose on earth.”
In his remarks, Abiola applauded the late governorship candidate’s contribution to the development of education in Nigeria and promised to keep his legacies as part of the PRP’s manifesto on education.
He promised that Bamgbose’s family will continue to be part of the PRP family.
His words ” We have a grand plan which he would have been part of but PRP is a big family and he will never be forgotten. His legacies will be part of our strategies for campaign in next year’s election”.
” I plan to work closely with him as educationist. We have many professors in PRP. We want to assure you all that we will give equal leverage to education for all. You are part of PRP. I never get to meet him.
“But from what I heard and read about his, it showed he was a people oriented person and that’s what I stand for.”
To, Achudume, the late Bamgbose would be missed.
He also encouraged Christians to participate in politics, saying when the righteous govern, the people will rejoice.
The cleric, however, cautioned politicians not to manipulate the will of the people in the coming election.
Speaking with newsmen on the ongoing strike of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kola said Nigerians should not be surprised if the Federal Government resolves the crisis two months to the election.
“I am not worried. If they are ready to solve it (strike), they will solve. Don’t be surprised that two months to the election, they will solve it so that many of you can vote because you would have registered at home. Don’t worry about that.”
Asked if it’s deliberate act by the FG, he said “I am not saying its deliberate but it is not impossible, we are in Nigeria and we should be expecting different magic form our politicians.”
