Naira redesign: APC governors, NWC want AGF, CBN to respect Supreme Court order

Governors under the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as well as the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, have called on the Attorney General of the Federation and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to respect the subsisting order issued by the Supreme Court.

This was part of the resolution arrived at after a meeting of the APC governors with the members of the NWC led by the National Chairman of the party, Senator Abdullahi Adamu,  in Abuja, on Sunday.

In a communique issued shortly after the meeting, National Chairman of the party, Senator Adamu, said both the governors and NWC of the APC have decried the difficulties Nigerians and the economy of the country are going through as a result of the implementation of the currency redesign by the Federal Government. 

The governors and the APC NWC therefore called on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene towards resolving the issues that are causing great difficulties to the people and economy of the country. 

Text of the communique read at the end of the meeting reads as follows:

"The meeting APC governors and the leadership of the NWC of our great party, the APC was summoned for this afternoon.  We have had discussions and at the end of the discussion, we have resolved as follows. 

"And the resolution is without prejudice whatsoever to the case that is laying at the Supreme Court  at this point in time. This has to do with the issue of currency redesign.  

"We note very seriously that the programme and its implementation is causing tremendous difficulties to the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and to the national economy. 

"That we urge the Attorney General of the Federation and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria to respect the Supreme Court order of interim injunction which is still persisting. 

"That the meeting is urging His Excellency,  Mr President to intervene in resolving the issues that are causing these great difficulties to the people and the economy."

Recall that, on 8 February, following the difficulties faced by Nigerians in accessing the redesigned notes, the Supreme Court gave an order restraining the CBN from enforcing the deadline for the phasing out of the N200, N500, and N1,000 notes, pending the hearing of a lawsuit brought by three northern states challenging the new currency redesign.
