ASUU Threatens Fresh Strike, Issues 2-Week Ultimatum to FG Over Unhonoured Agreement

By Apapa Azeezat, Abeokuta

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Uyo branch, has issued a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to honour the 2009 renegotiated agreement or risk industrial action.

Speaking during a public sensitization protest at the University of Uyo town campus on Wednesday, ASUU Chairperson, Prof Opeyemi Olajide, expressed frustration over the government's failure to address the union's demands despite an eight-month strike in 2022.

Prof Olajide warned that if the government fails to act within the next two weeks, the union will shut down universities and send students home. "We are telling the government and the public that if nothing is done in the next two weeks, ASUU will embark on yet another strike," he said.

The union has reached out to relevant authorities to intervene, but to no avail. ASUU is demanding that the government honour the renegotiated 2009 agreement, which includes improved funding for universities, better working conditions, and a more sustainable university system.
