A 25-year-old guardian, Temitope Adeyanju, a resident of Isewo, Obada-Oko in Ewekoro local government area of Ogun State is currently in police net for allegedly assaulting a 12-year-old girl over allegations of stealing biscuits and some edibles.
She is alleged to have beaten and savagely inserted a piece of firewood into the private parts of a 12-year-old girl in her care for allegedly stealing “items including biscuits worth ₦200, Milo worth ₦150, and Mr. Fruit worth ₦300.”
The incident, it was gathered occurred on Tuesday 11th June 2024 at about 1100hrs, and it was reported by neighbours at the Divisional police headquarters at Obada Oko, and the operatives acted swiftly.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Omolola Odutola said the suspect admitted to committing the crime, and the investigation is currently ongoing.
Odutola said, “The incident occurred on 11/06/24 at about 1100hrs. The Divisional Police Officer received information that a 12-year-old girl from Isewo Obada Oko was severely beaten and had a piece of firewood inserted into her private part by her guardian, one Temitope Adetanju, a 25-year-old woman residing at the same address.
“On receipt of the distress report, the Divisional Police Officer deployed the Officer in Charge of Juvenile Welfare Center, to apprehend the suspect. Upon her arrest, it was discovered that the victim had stolen items including biscuits worth N200, Milo worth N150, and Mr. Fruit worth N300.”
She described her offence as “a case of child abuse and assault causing harm.”
Reacting to the development, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development,
Hon. Motunrayo Adijat Adeleye, said her ministry has taking custody of the victim.
She said, "the Ministry has swung into action to locate and identify the victim and the alleged perpetrator involved in this incident, Mrs. Adeyanju Temitope, 25 years old, who is currently in police custody. With the assistance of various stakeholders, we are obtaining relevant details to aid further investigation by law enforcement agencies".
"As part of our proactive efforts, we are immediately taking responsibility for the minor for full medical attention. We are committed to providing her with adequate medical and psychosocial support".
We wish to reassure the public that the State Government, under the leadership of the Prince Dapo Abiodun administration, remains steadfast in its commitment to safety and child protection. We also remind the general public that anyone who engages in actions contrary to the State Child Rights Law will face the full wrath of the law.
"We appeal to all members of the public to protect minors and report any cases of child abuse or gender-based violence. We assure you that the protection of sources is guaranteed".
