By Our Correspondent

Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) says it has crashed prices of per kilogram of tomatoes in the local markets in the Ogun State capital by over 50 percent with ongoing sales of the product from its farm estate on the Alabata main campus

Director of Directorate of the University Farms, Dr.Emmanuel Bankole who revealed this to Edu-Biznews in an interview, says per kilogram of tomatoes which used to be sold between N1,800 and N1,700 are now being sold at N750 with better quality at the markets in the city, as part of efforts by FUNAAB to address food crisis in Nigeria and make it more affordable for consumers

The university according to him, is also into sales of fresh eggs at N4,500 per crate to traders unlike in the market that goes for N5,500 and above

He added that the university would continue to engage in massive production of groundnut and fresh vegetables amongst others using improved varieties of seedlings for planting

The Director of the university farms also gave insight into the forthcoming partnership between FUNAAB and ASSETRISE on the proposed 100 hectares of Yam Plantation , saying the initiative is inline with policy of the university to make agriculture as a serious business venture beyond just training of graduates and carrying of research as a specialized university in the Agric sector of the economy

He added that aside the proposed plantation, there would also be a summit on Agric entrepreneurship on how to make students in the institution to take advantage of numerous business opportunities along the value chains of production, packaging and marketing of Yam as an export commodity to our other countries
