The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Olubunmi Abayomi Omotesho, has announced that new students will resume for the 2024/2025 academic session in October. This cohort will include students who were initially admitted for the 2023/2024 session, as well as those who recently participated in the 2024/2025 Post-UTME exercise.
In an interview, Prof. Omotesho explained that the proposed October resumption date would first be reviewed by the Committee of Provosts and Deans, in accordance with standard procedures, before being submitted to the Senate for final approval. “Once the Senate approves,” he stated, “the official resumption date will be announced.”
Addressing the reason behind merging two sets of applicants for a single academic session, Prof. Omotesho highlighted the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and the prolonged strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), both of which resulted in the university falling one session behind its regular schedule.
Prof. Omotesho further explained that the university administration had initially proposed merging two academic sessions to address this backlog. However, the 13th Council suggested running the sessions concurrently. “Logistical challenges have shown that running two sessions simultaneously is not feasible,” he noted.
Following extensive consultations, the University management decided to officially cancel the 2023/2024 session. Prof. Omotesho clarified, “Given the logistical complexities, the most practical solution is to merge the two sessions. This approach, which involves managing two sets of JAMB candidates concurrently, is necessary to prevent the continuous lag of one set of students.”
He added that this decision aims to streamline the university’s academic calendar, allowing the new session to start in October and restoring the traditional cycle, where academic sessions begin in October and conclude in July.
