US hands over N81b recovered from Diezani to FG

By Olawale Kolawole, Abeokuta

The Nigerian government received $52.88 million in recovered assets related to former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke on Friday.

The funds were returned from the United States, marking a significant step in the ongoing efforts to combat corruption.

At a formal signing ceremony in Abuja, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, confirmed the recovery. Fagbemi shared details on how the funds would be allocated. He explained that $50 million of the recovered amount would go through the World Bank to support rural electrification projects. The remaining $2.88 million will be directed to the International Institute of Justice to strengthen the justice system and promote anti-corruption efforts.

“This asset return signifies a milestone in the collaboration between Nigeria and the United States to combat corruption and uphold the rule of law,” Fagbemi stated. He also highlighted that this recovery supports President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to addressing corruption and ensuring public funds are used effectively.

U.S. Ambassador Richard Mills also spoke at the event, emphasizing the need for accountability. He urged the Nigerian government to monitor the use of the recovered funds carefully. “The Ministry of Justice must guarantee that these funds are used transparently and effectively to improve the lives of Nigerians,” Mills said.
